SCC Open Day 2017

The Smart Card Centre Open Day 2017 took place on 30th August 2017 in the Picture Gallery, Founders Building, Royal Holloway University of London, Egham, TW20 0EX

This free exhibition (50:50 mix of industry and student exhibits) was a relaxed networking and exhibition event for its sponsors, supporters and industry lecturers plus honoured guests and students. The Open Day included practical demonstrations of products and technology,

There were four interesting sound bite talks which covered a range of smart card and IoT security issues:

John Moor, IoTSF “IoT security – so what’s new?”
Chris Loreskar, Trustonic “Securing IoT”,
Nationwide, “Squaring the circle; balancing compliance and innovation in security”
and NCSC, “Physical threats to smart cards”.

The day ended with a prestige lecture from Ken Munro, Pen Test Partners, entitled “The IoT does actually make me WannaCry. The truth behind ransomware, botnets and your household goodies”

“The SCC Open Day was once again a great success and it was good to see some new companies and sponsors alongside our established friends. The Information Security Group’s motto of “academia and industry in harmony” form the backbone of the SCC’s activities and it was substantiated once more through today’s event. Our student posters included topics from drone security, trusted execution environments, data provenance, tokenization, ambient sensors, DVR vulnerabilities, automotive security, Near Field Communication, Internet-of-Things (IoT) as well as overall application/system security solutions. This was the first time that undergraduate students presented their work and we are pleased to say that two out of the three best student posters were by undergraduates. However, all our students demonstrated professionalism, commitment and expertise. Among the highlights of the day included the four sound bite talks and the keynote talk by Ken Munro on the vulnerabilities of IoT systems. The event demonstrates that the SCC research maintains its highly respected academic and real world significance.”
