Provenance is the history of data from its inception to destruction, which details all of the processes that handled the data. In the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) data might be collected from the field deployed nodes. This data is then aggregated at data centres that might later be analysed in order to provide better-targeted services and/or management of the CPS. These decisions rely on the quality of the data, establishing trust in the data along with potential features of tracking data back to its source. In this work we rely on data provenance; thus tracking data from its original inception as a string a bits to its potential final destination as part of Big Data. Any analysis performed on such data will have the assurance of quality of the data and its security.
In Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), data might be collected from a number of nodes deployed in the field. We are investigating data provenance mechanisms for personal information stored in the cloud.
We have developed a patent on data provenance and GDPR compliance and the college is currently exploring commercialization opportunities.
